How much does custom software cost in 2026?

Every guide to custom software cost is written by a company that sells development, hosting or an app builder. This one sorts the market by how you buy it, copies the prices builders publish on the day we read them, and says how solid each estimate is.

The short answer

There is no price list for custom software. At one end, an AI app builder costs tens of dollars a month. At the other, development firms quote six and seven figures. The numbers in between come from estimates published by companies that sell development, hosting or a builder, and they disagree because they price different things: who builds it, how complex it is, and what custom means.

Three ways to get software built

Three routes to the software you need, and what each one publishes, as of October 9, 2026
RouteWhat you payWhat is publishedFits when
Off-the-shelf softwareA subscription per user or per businessA price on the vendor's pageA product already does what you need, so you configure rather than build
An AI or no-code builderA subscription, plus credits or usageA price on the builder's page. What you end up with depends on how much you build and reviewA small internal tool, a prototype, or a simple app that you or a staff member can build and maintain
A custom build by a developer or agencyA project fee or an hourly rate, then maintenanceEstimates from the firms that sell it, rarely a priceNo tool fits, the process is the point, or the build needs integrations, security or compliance

Nova Solutions works in the third row. Where an off-the-shelf product or a builder does the job, it is the cheaper answer, and the next section gives the builders' own prices.

What AI app builders charge

These are the subscriptions the builders publish on their own pricing pages, read on October 9, 2026. They are the only app-building prices in this post that anyone can check today. They are subscription prices: each plan caps how much you can build with credits or tokens, and none of them includes a person to review, host and maintain what you build.

AI and no-code app builder plans, prices from each builder's own pricing page, read October 9, 2026
BuilderFree planEntry paid planHigher tiersWhat the plan caps
LovableYes, $0Pro, $25 a monthBusiness, $50 a month; Enterprise is volume-pricedPro includes 100 monthly credits
Base44Yes, $0: 25 message credits a month, up to 5 appsStarter, $16 a month billed annuallyBuilder $40, Pro $80, Elite $160 a month, all billed annuallyMessage and integration credits: Starter 100, Builder 250, Pro 500, Elite 1,200 message credits a month
BoltYes, $0Pro, $25 a month billed monthlyTeams, $30 a month per member; Enterprise by quoteFree: 300K tokens a day and 1M a month. Pro starts at 10M tokens a month
ReplitNot listed on the pricing pageCore, $20 a month ($18 billed annually)Pro, $100 a month ($90 billed annually); Enterprise by quoteCore includes $20 towards more powerful models; Pro includes $100
Bubble (web)Yes, $0: 500 AI credits a monthStarter, $29 a month billed annuallyGrowth $119, Team $349 a month, both billed annually; Enterprise by quoteAI credits and workload units: Starter has 1,000 AI credits and 175K workload units a month

What the table does not show is the cost of what you build. Credits and tokens run out, generated code still needs someone to read it, and an app that holds customer data needs hosting, backups, security updates and a person who owns it when something breaks.

What the custom-build guides claim, and how solid each is

Three guides that appeared on the first page of Bing results for these searches, read on October 9, 2026. Each is published by a company that sells development, hosting or an AI builder, and none publishes the projects or the survey behind its figures.

Published estimates of custom software and app cost, and how solid each is, read October 9, 2026
SourceWhat it claimsWho publishes itHow solid
Keyhole Software, custom software cost guide (published January 14, 2026, modified August 24, 2026)Simple or MVP build $40,000 to $120,000 over 2 to 4 months; medium complexity $120,000 to $300,000; high complexity $300,000 to $1,000,000 or moreA custom software development firmVendor estimate. Says it presents industry data alongside real-world pricing; the data is not published
GoDaddy, how much it costs to make an app (published July 28, 2026, modified September 3, 2026)Simple app free to $20,000; mid-level $20,000 to $75,000; complex $75,000 to $250,000; enterprise $250,000 to $500,000 or moreGoDaddy, which sells an AI website and app builderVendor estimate. Calls its figures broad starting points; no data published
Emergent, how much it costs to create an app (last updated July 2, 2026)Freelancer $5,000 to $200,000 or more; agency $30,000 to $500,000 or more; AI and no-code tools $0 to $549 a monthEmergent, which sells an AI app builderVendor estimate. Says it compared current plans, usage-based pricing and custom development benchmarks; the benchmarks are not itemized

Read together they show the problem. A simple app is $40,000 to $120,000 at the development firm and free to $20,000 at the hosting company, because they describe different builds, by different builders, for different buyers. Neither is a quote, and neither tells you what your project costs.

What moves the number

  • Scope. The riskiest assumption decides the first build. A build that tests one idea costs less than one that implements a feature list, and it tells you whether the rest is worth building.
  • Integrations. Connecting to a CRM, an accounting package, a phone system or an older internal system usually adds more work than the screens a user sees.
  • Compliance and data. Software that holds regulated or customer data needs security and review work that a prototype does not.
  • Who builds it and where. Keyhole Software's 2026 table puts senior developers at $125 to $250 or more an hour in the US and Canada, $95 to $150 in Central and Northern Europe, $45 to $75 in Latin America and $30 to $50 in Asia. It is one firm's average, not a survey, and it notes that lower rates can come with more coordination overhead.
  • Owning the result. Whether you get the code, the data and the roadmap, or rent them, changes what you carry in year two and after.
  • What it costs after launch. Keyhole Software puts annual maintenance at 15 to 25% of the original build cost, with hosting, licences and security work on top.

When custom software is worth it

This section is our view, not a published figure. If an off-the-shelf product covers the workflow, buy it: it is cheaper, someone else maintains it, and its price is on a page you can check. Custom software earns its cost in three situations: no product fits the process, the process is what sets the business apart, or the tools being stitched together cost more in time and fees than owning one system would. Even then the first build should be the smallest one that tests the riskiest assumption, not the full feature list.

Where Nova fits

Nova Solutions builds custom websites and web apps, web and mobile apps, and AI agents and automation. It does not publish a starting price, because the scope decides the number. Every build is scoped on a free call: send the idea and who it is for, and Nova sends back an MVP scope, a timeline and a modeled starting range within 48 hours. You own the code and the roadmap. The team is senior engineers in the US and Manila, working at Philippine engineering rates.

This post makes no result claims. Every figure above is someone else's published price or estimate, and Nova's own number comes from scoping your project. If you need a website for a home-service business rather than a custom build, How much does a contractor website cost lists fixed tiers. If you are weighing the Philippines for a build, Custom AI development cost in the Philippines and Filipino AI builder vs US agency cover that market with their own estimates. Questions this post answers

How much does custom software development cost?
There is no standard price. Keyhole Software, a development firm, puts a simple or MVP build at $40,000 to $120,000, a medium-complexity build at $120,000 to $300,000 and a high-complexity build at $300,000 to $1,000,000 or more, while GoDaddy puts a mid-level app at $20,000 to $75,000. Those are vendor estimates and neither publishes the projects behind them. What moves the number is scope, integrations, compliance, who builds it and where, and what maintenance costs after launch.
How much does it cost to build an app for my business?
It ranges from a builder subscription of about $16 a month for an entry plan, if you build it yourself, to tens of thousands of dollars for a freelancer or small agency, to six figures for a complex app. GoDaddy's guide, read on October 9, 2026, puts a simple app at free to $20,000, a mid-level app at $20,000 to $75,000 and a complex app at $75,000 to $250,000. Add maintenance, which Keyhole Software puts at 15 to 25% of the build cost a year.
How much does a custom web application cost?
A web app falls inside the same bands. A simple one sits at the low end of the project ranges above, and user accounts, payments, integrations or regulated data move it up. Nova Solutions does not publish a starting price for web apps. Send the idea and who it is for, and it sends back a scope, a timeline and a modeled starting range within 48 hours.
How much does it cost to build an app with AI tools like Lovable or Base44?
The subscriptions we read on October 9, 2026: Lovable Pro is $25 a month with 100 monthly credits, Base44 Starter is $16 a month billed annually with 100 message credits (Builder is $40 with 250), Bolt Pro is $25 a month billed monthly, and Replit Core is $20 a month. Credits and tokens cap how much you can build or change in a month, and the subscription does not include review of the generated code, hosting a business app properly, or someone to maintain it.
How much does it cost to hire a developer?
Keyhole Software's 2026 table puts senior developers at $125 to $250 or more an hour in the US and Canada, $95 to $150 in Central and Northern Europe, $45 to $75 in Latin America and $30 to $50 in Asia, and notes that the lower-cost regions bring more coordination overhead. These are one firm's averages, not a survey.
Is custom software worth it for a small business?
Only when an off-the-shelf product cannot do the job. If a subscription covers your workflow, buy it. Custom software earns its cost when no product fits the process, when the process is what sets the business apart, or when the tools you are stitching together cost more in time and fees than owning one system would. Even then, start with the smallest build that tests the riskiest assumption.
