What maintenance actually covers

  • Hosting: where the site lives. Hostinger lists hosting at $2 to $300-plus a month, and Wix puts shared hosting from about $5.
  • Domain renewal: about $10 to $20 a year for a .com, per Wix.
  • Security certificate (SSL): often bundled, otherwise from about $5 a year per Wix.
  • Software and plugin updates, backups and security monitoring, mostly on WordPress sites.
  • Small content changes: new photos, hours, prices or a service page.
  • Someone to call when the site breaks.

When comparing quotes, ask which of these each price includes. A low monthly fee that covers only hosting is not the same as a care plan that includes updates and fixes.

Builders versus WordPress

On a website builder like Wix or Squarespace, hosting, security and software updates come with the plan, so maintenance is mostly your time spent on content. A self-hosted WordPress site needs someone to keep the software and plugins updated. That is where care plans like WP Buffs come in, from $89 a month for one site.

Do it yourself or hire it out

If your site rarely changes and runs on a builder, doing it yourself is reasonable and costs little beyond the plan. If you would rather not think about it, a bundled monthly fee covers the essentials. At Nova Solutions, the $149 monthly fee covers hosting, domain, SSL, support and a monthly performance report for the sites we build.
